I’ve been thinking about the difference between “she makes really good content” and “I fucking love her. I need to know what she thinks about this.”
Because those are two very different relationships with an audience and I think they build very different brands and businesses.
This all started because I caught myself listening to a woman on a podcast talk about ceramics.
Ceramics.
I do not make ceramics. I have no plans to make ceramics. I’m not secretly researching pottery wheels in my spare time and yet there I was, listening to the whole damn thing.
Why? Because I liked her. I liked the way she thought and I wanted her take.
All this made me wonder: what makes someone become that girl?
The one whose podcast you listen to even when the title has nothing to do with you. Whose email you open because you saw her name. Who can tell you about something you didn’t know you cared about and somehow, now you care.
And the more I broke it down, the more I realized: I don’t think you need to become that woman.
I think you already are her.
The question is whether enough of her is making it into your work.
